the scrolling on this app is so glitchy. I can't tell if it is glitchy just when I'm trying to scroll past an ad in the middle of an article or if it is just all- around glitchy, but it is so hard to navigate this app and read articles.

i don't like how you block your articles unless people are using the app, I don't want to use the app

low quality app. Why does the search icon disappear sometimes? Why is the largest available font so small? why does it so easily flip into another column unbidden?

Broken on android, crashes in open. Update: Many weeks later, the app still crashes on load repeatedly. Unusable.

I have to look into this further, but it could be very helpful as my current OTC Eargo hearing aids become extinct (they never worked well in the first place). If my insurance helps as much as it did in this situation, I'd be thrilled. Thanks.

The scrolling is horrible, when there's an ad in the way, user cannot scroll through and only every 2 or 3 touch will register.

I once subscribed to the Washington Post after them constantly begging for a subscription and only allowing me to read partial articles. Then they basically made it impossible for me to read them anyway. This app isn't that. Super easy to use. I've had it a week and I love it. You choose what interests you, they give you the headlines on your phone, you simply tap the headline, it takes you to a page where there's more in-depth headlines, another tap, and you're reading a well-written article.

The new "You" tab design removed all Following sections, making desired content harder or impossible to find. Workarounds waste time and are unacceptable. We will not get used to or accept this design. Restore all Following sections in the "You" tab. This issue is serious enough that I am considering canceling my subscription, which I have had since 2013. [Update 22 after my first review.]

Too Many Ads! Scrolling Is A Nightmare!!

Forces you to subscribe, althought says its free. Then you see later in the fine print that it will automatically subscribe and renew. Not that you consented to this. Now im trying to delete the account and cannot find any way to delete the subscription. Seriously will never use this type of service its pathetic in the way it tries to lock you in and make unsubscribing impossible. Should be illegal.

This app is malware. You can't scroll through an article without having to touch ads that will take you to unsafe phishing sites. The journalism is excellent but they have allowed their mobile IT team or contractor to package it in malware. Every developer should be fired and this app should be scrubbed.

The latest changes have made it worse Old 2*:I Suggest a home button on EVERY page. The Search has gotten worse, I put in a rare(ish) last name. Returns 100s of results that don't have that name. Silver lining: Ads are so slow to load sometimes I finish the article before they show up. Much below unchanged 2023:It's ok for reading the text of articles and some photos. Searching is bad. I'm noticing most positive reviews are for content rather than the app. I agree, good articles, REALLY bad app!

In the age of AI and hallucinations, a reliable source—even one that offers only a biased Western view—can still be valuable. An intelligent person who consumes news from many independent sources that are orthogonal can compensate for such biases. so I do rely on NYT.

Offline reading is a joke. 12 hour flight and would live to catch up on articles. Not possible even though they supposedly have option to do it. Lame.

It's not what it used to be. It's been captured, in recent years, by critical social justice ideologues. Don't rely on it as your single news source unless you're less interested in trying to understand the world and mostly want to be able to discuss it with New York Times reader narrative fluency.

I have seen, as a "close bystander" several organizations flailing between internally promoted (core product specialists) managers, and externally recruited MBA's. Long story short, MBA's were not any better (arguably worse, long term), except that they had a tendency to alienate employees. This article partly explains the possible mechanism involved.

Works well. I do wish people could see shared articles, or at least a summary, without a subscription. For me, lack of this ability makes the app much less useful. There is a low cost option for those wishing to try a subscription though.

App is crashing/shutting down while I am listening to a podcast in my car, right around the time that the screen times out. I never had this issue before.

The app keeps refreshing randomly mid article and pushes me back to the main feed. If I want to continue reading that article, I have to find out again, click on it, and scroll down to where the app kicked me out. Notices to customer service only give you worthless general AI answers. And yes, I tried everything, restart, reinstall, all settings. As a paid subscriber, this is unacceptable.

Uninstall. Reading experience ruined by none other than the Times themselves! Paying subcriber for years: The (new-ish/2y old??) pop-up that appears whenever a screenshot is taken is a short-sighted and ridiculous UX decision. On top of that, the amount of advertising throughout articles seems to have GROWN SIGNIFICANTLY, ruining the reading experience. Only access content in browser because they ruined the app. And no, NYT, you can't entice me with games while you break a perfectly good thing.

App randomly goes back to the front page news when I'm in the middle of an article or game

I value the New York Times as a highly responsible and respected paper, free of intrusive political bias. But I don't pay for the paper and my main usage is for Wordle. It's also valuable for people who have developed serious cognitive problems, as it uses bits of the brain unaffected by Alzheimer's. Good for morale! There's a slight but worthwhile challenge for us Britons, when we encounter the subtle small divergences of usage and spelling between American and British English.

NYT reporting is top notch as always, but I don't need an all access family account that will add $30 a month to my bill after the first 6 months (in hopes that I'll forget to cancel) and I'm tired of the NYT trying to annoy me into upgrading.

This makes inordinate sense, says this Progressive Democrat and mother of a son who has substance abuse in his past and serious mental illness. Leaving people on the street who are sick is anything but Progressive. It's cruel.

Getting sick and tired of the autoplay video ads in this app. Subscribers shouldn't be subjected to this--we're already paying for the content. These ads are headache-inducing and often make the text jump while you're reading it.

The design and user experience is generally fine, but the app frequently closes articles when I'm in the middle of reading them.

NY Times is my "must read" every morning. (I subscribe - you should, too.) Balanced, informative, comprehensive news including US and International. Reporters are astute and capable of great writing. In these chaotic times, honest reporting is critical. NYT gives it to us. read, be informed, vote informed!

This is the most frustrating app ever! It freezes, it crashes, it skips around, it won't even open at times. Yes, I've uninstalled/reinstalled, restarted my phone, cleared the cache--no change. Now would somebody please tell me why there is a separate games app? It's repetitive--you can get all the games on the main app or just go to the website. Given what I've said about the app, you're probably just better off going to the website.

the content is great, hence the stars. but the scrolling is kind of wonky when it comes to pictures in the article? when it's only words, it scrolls smoothly, but it takes a few swipes at pictures to scroll past them. if it's a connectivity issue, perhaps there should be a low data mode that we can toggle to prevent this.

Heaven forbid you should accidentally delete a notification for an article that you want to read. You can go to your notification history, of course, but if you try to take the subject line from the notification and search the nyt app, you're probably not going to find the article easily, because the headline will be different.

While reading an article on my tablet, hand on the back of the tablet or with it standing on its own, it will spontaneously close the article and go back to the previous page. So I reopen the article I was reading and try to get to my previous place in the article but now scrolling lags and the page freezes. This occurs often. I am uninstalling the app because getting through a single article takes multiple tries. Very frustrating. Nice presentation though: well organized and nice graphics.

2026 update: somehow the app is even worse now. it takes so long to refresh on high speed connection and doesn't download background updates despite my settings. awful Long time subscriber. This rating is for the app, not the journalism. Why does it take 15+ seconds to load or refresh the front page now? Ever since they added all the side tabs the experience using this app is horrible. This is basic software development to load the most important content first but they've somehow failed at that

Well written with important key information - e.g. Ms. Hamilton worked nights & weekends while taking care of her young daughter. Can anyone - except a Mom involved in a STEM career - imagine doing that? OR picture a _man_ of that era, let alone today, being willing to do that!? Despite the horrifically irrational woman hating Billionaire Tech-Bros' inexplicable & on-going misogyny, we must encourage more women in every field of Science, Technology, Engineering & Math to be like Ms. Hamilton.

top story, in advance of actuality

There are still two major issues I have with this app that I've had for years: the biggest issue is no dedicated home button on all screens. Once you're in an article, the only way to get back to the homepage, or even a sections menu, is to hit back until you completely close the app. And the articles with embedded graphics do not scroll smoothly, which makes for a very frustrating experience. These issues persist over years. Fix it, NYT.

It freezes up when I'm scrolling an article and boots me to the home screen. It's done this for years but it's gotten worse lately, to the point where I don't finish about half of the articles before it crashes. Fix your app!

This app is soo slow

introducing ideas that are new to me! and backing it with some science, common sense and appreciation. I'm in the health care field (EMS, retired nurse), and see this come up so often!

The Android app is abysmal. Every update it loses functionality or degrade in performance. Current major bugs: 1) App reloads article contents and jumps back to the top of the article if you navigate briefly to another app or look up from reading for several seconds. 2) Sections do not refresh at, unless manually forced. Even when navigating to a section from the top bar, stale articles appear. 3) Offline articles take an extremely long time to load (20 seconds+).

I love this app. it calms my soul with the warm reads, and positive vibes from all the inspirational articles that I never knew this mag had! I wish I could afford a subscription! Santa's coming, maybe my name will be picked this year!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! Peace Positive!

What a beautiful story of an unexpected reunion between a son and father after years of searching by the father and the mother of the man now revealed as their son whom was placed in adoption due to the very young unprepared ages of his parents which never stopped searching for him as the years passed. Just an incredible reunion that seems to have evolved beautifully for both parents who kept in touch even though they each sought different lives...but together the bond they shared is unbreakable

Unsubcribing due to how bad this app is. I've been a subscriber for years and have had issues with this app for years. Update after update NYT fails to address basic issues like scrolling and freezing. Every single time I am reading an article I am unable to properly scroll through the piece. The scrolling is consistently unresponsive.

The recent app update changed the pinned sections to bunch that I have little interest in reading. I'm not interested in Best of TV, among others. Give users the option to pin sections to the top menu.

Head & shoulders above any other source of news.

I love New York Times reporting, but this app update is terrible. I used to have my favorite sections pinned to the top menu. Now I have to scroll all the way to the right and hit Sections, then scroll through a long list to get to the sections I want. This is such a pain. Please bring back a way to pin favorite sections!

Beyond the specific choice made, this article highlights some interesting features of the Education system. As the saying goes "No one rises to low expectations." Unfortunately, significant sections of our education system is set up expecting mediocrity masquerading as excellence. There needs to be a change of attitude. Attitudes determine our altitude. With a change in attitude and appropriately targeted funds, we can significantly improve the system. This is a tremendously important article.

This app seems to worsen with time. From latest updates, the app continuously resets, even in the middle of reading lengthy articles. For example, despite being in the middle of an article it will go to the home page and you have to find the article and scroll back to where you were. Who would want that?

paywall, disorganized, not worth the time or money

The app keeps pushing me to customize my tabs so I can read the things I care about most. But this "Best of TV" tab has popped up front and center and I can't get rid of it. Is this a bug? I love Colman Domingo but I don't really care what his favorite TV show is.

The New York times is simply incomparable. I start a long article. sure, my attention span can't handle it and before I know it I'm enlightened. he probably really is all the news you need. And the crossword puzzles rule.
