Adverts whilst subscribing is distracting

Great that I can get Radio 4 in Belgium with this App - although why they had to suddenly ban overseas users from BBC Sounds, i don't know. I find that when you are listening to the radio, if you try and do anything else on your phone (and have it running in the background) it crashes after a few minutes. Also, if you stop the radio it will restart itself after a few seconds again if you have an Internet connection - which is annoying.

up to date news which is reliable and free. there is a BUG in this app. if the phone switchs to web browser app, such as Firefox, or taps on a link in an article, then when phone switches back to this app then it reloads the news and it takes the user get back to the headlines, not to the article that was being read.

I love the content they publish. It's high quality and, of course, requires payment for access. However, the app doesn't work properly. It keeps asking me to pay for a subscription even though I already have one. Thus, I had to delete it from my phone and add a shortcut to the website to have access to the content.

It's now obsessed with disgusting American news as is bbc world news. The intent now seems to be charging as much as they can get away with while offering very little. And it's goodbye to BBC for me.

I'm disappointed with you, BBC... I have been reading, listening, and watching the BBC News for years. Getting the real news, coverage, and explanation what's going on around the world. But now, every article on the app is behind a paywall subscription. Frustrating... At this point, the app is useless. It would be best to remove / uninstall or ignore this BBC News app...

This used to be a great app, with respectful handling of advertising. Not anymore. Now it has zero-click adverts that trigger just by attempting to scroll the display. This then exposes one to potential malware at the other end of those non-BBC links from the adverts. And further insult, these still appear after paying for a subscription, and the app then keeps blocking content telling one to subscribe even though one already has. SCAM! Do not pay for the sham subscription.

This has been going on for a while and thinking of cancelling it...The app keeps asking me to sign up for subscription before I can read full stories. the problem is I have a subscription and this is just so annoying. They should be offering a refund as content is only the Headlines. Just changed the rating to 1 star as the workaround of go to the BBC website now has the same issue. this just become unusable.

I'm not sure what's going on with the app over the past year. The old app was great, every update is strange and unnecessary making the app worse. I've updated this review a few times with new issues even though old ones are not fixed almost a year later. Now my subscription keeps failing to be recognized and I'm locked out. Will I get a refund for this? Or at least until it's fixed? I cannot access the content at the moment

Used to be able to read bbc for free as a public good. Now have to pay a subscription. Forces you to sign in every 24 hours but the app bugs out 80% of the time and won't recognize your sign-in. It's just so sad to see what has become of the bbc.

Managed to read two articles before getting hit by a paywall and a demand to set up an account and pay. Greedy, greedy, greedy. Immediate uninstall.

Use to use this app daily as a reliable source of international news. Now the app constantly resets when I'm in the middle of reading and that's if I'm even able to access the article behind the paywall.

BBC, you got GREEDY, and it's a shame.

2 long ads to listen to the news. if connection is unstable you have to listen to those again to resume. limited selection. the worst there is.

App keeps saying I don't have a subscription even though I do. If this continues, I'm cancelling my subscription.

ETA: known issue per app developer. Looking forward to a fix and to revise this review. Original review (10/6/26): I pay for a subscription, but every time I click an article to read it, I have to sign into my subscription. I sign in, go back to the article, and have to sign in again. Repeat ad nauseum. I truly think I'm paying for nothing but an endless cycle of logging in. Completely disappointing app experience.

I don't understand why this app is rated so low!

The fact that I receive BBC news clearly every time of the day in southern Nigeria makes my day, because of the accuracy of the news most of the times.

I don't understand why every two weeks this app suddenly stops working and won't allow me to read anything though I have an active subscription. I have to delete and start again. It's happened 3 times so far. Very frustrating.

This BBC APP you must have a SUBSCRIBE which will cost you $49.99 USA dollars for each year -- or -- will cost you $8.99 for each month which will cost you $107.88 for 12 months per year and there are ad's too, many of ad's to keep you busy. This is not for me, I put my money in 1 oz of Silver each year.

The BBC app is pretty unstable, especially when compared with the BBC Sounds app. The app will often reboot after I get a phone call, requiring me to manually get back to the stream where I left off. The app stream also often freezes if the Bluetooth connection is broken, requiring a the app to be restarted. Please let us poor folks in the US have BBC Sounds again!

I used to like this as an alternative source for news outside of the USA. But now they want a ridiculous amount of money for US and Canada to view their stories. like $9 a month, or $50 a year. no way im paying that. I'll look elsewhere. Tons of FREE alternatives that will simple use you as a source anyways.

Great news service but app is terrible. Won't let me log in even though I have a paid subscription. Radio service is extremely unreliable, often have to close and reopen the app to listen to shows (despite reinstalling the app many times and even changing phones). Much less shows available than in the past, like the old comedies. Still have ads before videos despite subscription!

There is no better place to find wonderful podcasts BUT the app is appalling :). The podcast does not load. Every time I want to listen to something I have to uninstall and reinstall off Play Store. aaaaagh! do something, please!!

Great newspaper!!! Great App.... only occupies less than 50 MB in your device. Just want everyone to install the BBC app in their phone or tablet/ iPad and subscribe the newspaper from their "Google Play Store", " Apple play station". Please go "cashless" or "cardless" ..You can use Google Gift card or Apple gift cards to load money into your Google/ Apple account (say you loaded $10 ) and then let's subscribe the monthly BBC for just $8 which will be deducted from the Google money. Have Fun 😊

The new quality is very good, but the app is not so good. The links in my news feed never go to the correct story on the app, instead they go to the main landing page. if I go back out and click again, it does generally work the second time.

world news well covered

I don't know where to begin, or even how to articulate my disappointment with this app/service. Top of mind; my "continue watching" list has disappeared. It was there when purchased, then two weeks later it is gone. What else is missing? Substance. I find better information on any topic via free sources than anything offered by modern BBC. Yes, even American amateurs report news and present documentaries with far greater competence. BBC, you have fallen below those you once easily bested.

The BBC has a variety of programmes and is very often excellent. It might be too woke sometimes and made a big mistake by making it impossible to enjoy BBC Sounds outside the UK. it still remains a great source of information and entertainment.

Your recent shift to a new app nearly caused a heart ache as I wondered how and where I could get the English service. Thankfully, I wriggled my way to a solution! Could you please consider synchronizing ALL the broadcasts off the free-to-air frequencies and those being channeled through your app? Is there a good reason as to why they sometimes defer?

the app seizes up all together if you pause something you're listening to. The content is great, but everything is far too hard to find and counter-intuitive. The subscription is reasonable, but it needs far more work.

BBC appears to be just America news focused not the once global reporting service it use to be.

with so much fake news in the world, it's nice to have one news source you can rely one for accurate unbiased News around the world. The BBC.

I started listening to BBC in 1978 in the Netherlands as a typically ignorant American exchange student, then 'Iran' happened/ then Reagan happened..., now it's Drumph and Iran again (yet still) with 9-11 Afghanistan and Iraq in-between..., the pro-war bias of USA corporate media over five decades requires a thinking citizen to have a large variety of news sources: the BBC has always been one of them. :)

I feel yoir earlier BBC World service radio with deep red colour app was more user friendly. I was listening to it for over several years. Now I gave to search for news in this new app with black colour. veey difficult to get news. I gave been listening to BBC news both TV and radio for over 3 decades in Muscat and India. very difficult to find news in the new app. if is only podcast now. I miss not being able to turn on my television and seeing BBC World News I live in Australia and it was removed from Foxtel ( Sky tv in the UK ) so I use my online App. I'm Disabled and can be awake through the night so I do my catching up on the BBC app mostly at night. The advertisements videos stop please give us a choice. or a button to mute the sound of videos over night. I understand you need to make money

After more than a decade, I’m deleting the BBC News app. C$12.99/month is exorbitant, especially when I already pay for BBC News on cable and the app still has ads. Seeing Canadians who questioned the cost called “freeloaders” by British commenters made this rollout even worse. The BBC risks squandering trust, reach and soft power by pricing out longtime readers. It also reminds me why properly funding the CBC matters: trusted public-interest journalism should remain accessible. Goodbye!

The World Service pods are actually adverts which cannot be skipped. No doubt the pursuit of advertizing revenue is compromising journalistic credibility too. Now useless.

The BBC app used to be really great, but recently I’ve noticed ads playing more frequently. It doesn’t happen every time, but when I switch to a different podcast or audio clip, an ad sometimes plays again—even if I just heard one a minute ago. This is frustrating and makes listening less enjoyable. I hope the ad frequency can be capped.

For audio it has a few significant glitches. unlike other podcast apps I've used if you stop it for a little while you can't simply start playing again, have to close whatever was playing and then re-open it. secondly if I play through headphones and they lose connection or cut out, rather than pausing the podcast (as all other audio players do)it plays it through the speaker. Lastly it would be nice to have a playnext list. Update 08/26: audio barely works now, freezes every 5 minutes, unusable

Charging for articles now is so irritating. I can easily ask gemini or chat gpt for an update. I understand you need to get paid, so charge the companies that want to plaster ads to your app. Not the end user.

After close to a decade of relying on BBC News to give me unbiased world news coverage, I'm sadly uninstalling the app due to a paywall. I'm extremely disheartened about this.

BBC News is a publicly funded service in the UK that makes their money from taxes, and provides generally good quality, relatively unbiased news. However, they have made the greedy choice to now also start charging users outside the UK an absurdly high subscription cost to read their articles, on top of their public funding and ads. I happened to see a 30-minute podcast that I wanted to listen to. However, if I pause for 5 minutes and try and go back to it, then the podcast restarts. I pause frequently so this makes the audio on your app essentially unusable for me. why do you do that? wouldn't you rather I access your media, start to enjoy it and depend on it, and then maybe get a paid subscription? you'd rather I just quit an annoyance and frustration? Like many ex pat's this used to be my go too for reliable and unbiased world news ,but now since the subscription restrictions i have had to delete the app, like a lot of other companies the beeb has gotten greedy. I thought they were better.

Recently started so much behind pay walls, lost all desire to read anything on app.

One needs to pay for almost everything now, so I have uninstalled the app.

Recently the app has started to freeze when loading, showing a blank white screen. This is happening on both my phones.

The Amazon ads are extremely aggressive and annoying. You can't even scroll past them without being redirected to their stupid little website.

Poor quality news app

Great source of news, but more often then not I have to Google the headline because it's behind a paywall while the website of free and accessible. And the clickbait ads are unreal. "Your memory is insane if you can name these 10 tools!" Or maybe you just use a lot of tools. One of my pet peeves is being lied to for misled, and most ads do just that. If the product can't grab my attention without a lie it's not worth considering.

july 2026 update: audio section again hidden, search does not return audio i know is on the app, and when I get to the audio section all my "follow" or "continue listening" portions have disappeared. if i do find the next episode of a series or podcast I'm following, i go to a browser window in the app and then replay hangs. As I said when I first lost sounds access: if you wanted to replace sounds for those of us overseas the least you could have done is make a workable option.

Update Jul 5 2026 - It took 2 years, but we're there. Reading multiple stories now requires a subscription. As I did when the Guardian app did this, I'm uninstalling. I'll just read the BBC on their website. Original review from 2024: "The latest update prompts you to log in or create an account every time you open the app. The next update will probably require you to log in or have an account, similar to The Guardian app. These are the first steps in creating a paywall."
