Have been using for A while with forest road maps and really like it. One recent issue is the button that centers you at your current gps location seems to be gone from my app. I need to update my review. Avenza seems to want you to loose your maps when you get a new phone - backup and restore only for paid subscription - you can't select your own folder location - folder location in the app can only be accessed on a computer -I tried importing maps on my phone and got an import limit

Perfect recreational mapping tool for hiking, trail running, any outdoor adventure.

Excellent for hunting on WMAs in FL.

It was good, but now if you don't subscribe you can't bring in custom maps ( okay, you can bring in like 4) but by the time you get your custom map tweaked you've reached your import limit. I'm looking for an alternative and going to recommend my company do the same.

They ruined it, and it is now unusable. I attmpted to import one map and it demanded an upsell.

The price has gone up too fast. For use at work the price is OK. We should not get to use it for free. For recreational users it is priced far too high. Use any alternative you can find.

As a long time Avenza user, the new pricing tiers are a slap in the face. The Plus subscription used to have a flat limit of 20 custom maps, and now they have restricted it to 20 uploads. Under the current model, I can never upload a map again without upgrading to the ridiculously priced premium tier. Once again, the industry leading app shoots itself in the foot by harming its long-time users in a cash grab.

I use this app for hunting several State Forests within my State and they really help me with terrain and boundaries.

won't let me access any maps other than those purchases in their store. app says you can access 3. used to recommend this app. not any more. update sept 2026. now the maps I've used for years are saying map not referenced. so no blue dot showing where I am. and the app no longer even works on my kindle firewhich I use for trip planning.

if they have the map area you need, and they always have for me, it's great! I love putting markers on my app map and planning my route, and then being able to track my progress offline. I also love seeing the route I've actually used. I use it in conjunction with other off road apps since every app and map shows different roads and trails differently. I like it better than other off road maps. Avenza is my go to app. I use it with my old android phone offline while on the trail.

No more free custom map uploads, this app was great 5+ years ago. It has not added any interesting features but keeps lowering the free version usefulness. Now there are better more interesting alternative for free.

nice to have a map that works out in woods offline. Map tracks route in real time deep in the woods.

I purchased a map for $24.99. Before purchasing, it showed me the area the map supposedly covered, and I purchased it based on that. The map did not cover that area, and thus was useless for me. Google Play Store refused to refund the purchase. I will next attempt a chargeback on the credit card if Avenza does not refund it.

I don't often review apps, but this is worth it. Avenza is a brilliant companion to anyone going into the bush. Hiking or hunting, doesn't matter. It's awesome.

Just started using, great so far.

Use for the North Country Trail. Have been planning on upgrading to the pro for personal use but concerned about the changes with the Blue Marble acquisition and if the NCT maps will remain available. Was 5 stars but reduced to 2 due to these concens.

Too expensive. I couldn't even use it for one map I supplied without $35 fee. That's outrageous.

I reckon Avenza scored an own goal when they started charging casual users big $$. I paid, because Avenza was my go-to app for geo-referenced pdf's, but all my friends refused, so I looked around and found QField, free, does the same plus lots more. And for tracking, ATLOGIS Topo Maps works better, and for recording specific locations (like 'car here'), HandyGPS is better.

As an outdoorsman, I have used this app for years. Then, they suddenly lock their most popular feature (GeoPDF locating/viewing) behind a subscription based paywall. I would have considered paying if this was a one-time purchase, but a subscription?! On the bright side, Qfield by QGIS is a great alternative to this app. Good riddance. Just getting into your product but so far I like what I am finding..

Great App. I started using this app years ago and I still use it. I subscribe and I definitely get what I pay for. The only thing that would make it better is of all my maps I've loaded would transfer over when I get a new phone. every time I get a new phone I have re-download all of my maps.

pdf maps are a paid feature now, get lost

I was hoping to use this with USGS topo maps but it requires an expensive subscription to do anything with the app.

You used to be able to import 3 custom maps for free but now that is a premium feature worth $35 per year. For half that price you can use an app which allows unlimited downloads of offline data. Don't understand this price point for an app without even a basic map offline. If you provide your own map you pay to use the app.

I wish this app worked with regular password managers like Google or Samsung. VERY frustrating every time I get logged out or get a new phone. So now I have duplicate logins since I can never remember that I have an email/PW combo and not "login with Google" which further complicates things.

Unable to use it for the one purpose I wanted it for - to display the pdf from a government website unless I pay for a subscription. Utterly useless for me

the best map app available no question how this is a lifestyle requirement for any disbursed campers or trial lovers. download the map area you want and it can do more then I am able to put in use. tracking my location offline is so helpful when way tf out in it and alone no service. keep a dedicated old cell phone just for this purpose not killing battery auto searching for signal by every app you have that wants a network connection at all times

Download ignis! It has a lot of the same functionality and it's free! That's the app I've switched to for wildland. this app used to be great but private equity seems to have discovered it's usefulness. used to be able to have 3 imported maps at a time, now the low tier is 20 imports/year. I'll use it sparingly until an alternative for wildfire has been found. way to let profits get in the way of an effective and safe tool for communication and coordination.

A recent update has made recording a GPS track a mess. To the point where the app is completely useless. The track isn't updated in real time, the app stays in "Starting" forever, it doesn't show the current location. It's a complete waste of effort trying to use this POS. I will never buy another map from the store with the app this poor.

used to be great, now everything useful is locked behind a really expensive subription. they really got ahead of themselves; this is a pdf reader that does't even calculate total elevation of a trail, plenty of cheaper, if not free, alternatives.

This app is very handy if you take the time to download and link relevant GPX files before you go. it's sometimes annoying when the active live tracking layer sits obscured below other layers you have linked to the map. Downloading GPX files to your desktop or to the cloud needs to be done manually. I learnt this the hard way when I updated to a new handset and lost the record of all my hikes from the last 4 years. I'd love to see cloud integration in the next update!

Virginia State Parks provide trail maps for Avenza. Really useful when you have no cell signal in the mountains.

So Far, Avenza Maps is the best free Map App I have found. As someone who is a lifelong off-roader, and an owner of an OHV Rental business in Utah, that is high praise.

Very convenient for my recreational walks around the greater Adelaide region.

app was bought out by a greedy company its gone down hill pretty quickly gps works still but you gotta restart the app everytime you move to check your actual position, they changed the subscription to only 20 maps a year when it didnt have a limit and the subscription they want you to buy to get more costs 250 bucks. the only thing they have going now is the tracking is accurate. used to be able to see what direction your facing and all ans it just doesnt work very well anymore

I paid $70 for the Avenza Maps Plus but didn't know that I could only download 20 maps total. I did 20 the first week & deleted them. Now I can't use the app I paid for. I asked to cancel my sub & get a refund & was told I should do that through Google Pay. I did that but Google said no. 'this purchase doesn't meet with our policy. We understand that this must be frustrating and apologize for any inconvenience caused.' Thanks Google. I'm now stuck with an app I can't use & $70 out of pocket!!

AVenza maps is a great way to navigate in the woods, especially if you go off trail. It's nice to get back to your car at the end of the day.

It helps to know the plantation of the sites and numbers

annoying. countless times I draw out a section of the map only to be told it cannot draw complex shapes and deletes all my annotations. the nap icon also tells me I am not on the map when I am and it shows me to be in the wrong place. honestly if you are going to make people pay all of a sudden for your service it should at least be for a product that works.

While the app could be very useful and, in fact, used to be, they have changed to a subscription based service, rendering it useless without paying exorbitant amounts of money for an app you won't even own once paying it.

App has been acquired by new owners who have removed the basic free features that were the core of the app. Very sad to see an amazing piece of software turned into junk for corporate profit.

I have used this app for 3 years now, quite useful for surveying and looking at planned proposals in the field, however recently GNSS averaging has stopped working so I will cancel this £150/yr app.

have to pay now and contra free version (disallowed) does not allow gpx tracking on maps!

It's a good app for what it does. However, the internal map store really needs a rating/comment feature to help users figure out which maps are actually worth buying.

Was pointed to this app by Copilot AI. I saw that it had the best reviews out all apps I was considering, so I downloaded it. AI said I could upload 3 pdf files of maps I wanted to use. I clicked to upload my first file and got a pop-up that said I had reached my file limit and I needed to upgrade. I have never used, downloaded or even heard of this app before, so how could I be at my limit. And at $35-$100+ a year to upgrade? UNINSTALL

This is hands down the most useful app I have ever used. I am currently in forestry and it blows my mind how compatible it is to my job. 10/10

I fish lake Superior, both the twin ports area and apostles. Avenza is a must for me, I love the chart maps that are interactive with my gps position. a great tool and safety if on-board devices fail.

was able to get my favorite series of maps on here. Benchmark maps..... lots more capabilities than I will ever use. but the GPS tracking and locating is extremely usefull even with limited accuracy on my phone.

can't use any maps with out paying. wildland firefighters use this to help them navigate when out of home areas.

I loved using Avenza for years. Great for use beyond phone reception. But I don't use it often enough to justify the annual subscription. I've started using Organic Maps and so far I'm enjoying it. OM is more akin to Google maps, I can even use satellite imagary as an overlay on topo maps.

No matter what I did, it wouldn't load my map at all. It kept trying to get me to subscribe. Why would I want to buy something before trying it out first? Not very user friendly.

The new paywall has made me uninstall the app. I used to use this regularly for hunting and hiking. I told all my friends how great it was because I could import up to 3 GeoPDF maps. Now you have to pay for this functionality. If they dropped it to 1 imported map, I would be frustrated but would have stuck to it. I found free alternatives with ads so looks like I am moving on.

It's not fair to those who bought the upgrade pass, where those who have already imported maps but didn't buy the upgrade pass can still open their maps. Please do something about this.

The free version appears to be experiencing issues. Previously, we were able to visualize three map points without any charges, but this functionality seems to have ceased. Therefore, I would advise against using this application.

Great for OHV/OHM/UTV/ATV riding! Maps provide great topography and Information when we're riding trails, and do a great job keeping your location and showing where you are in relation to the surrounding geography. I much prefer this over trail map apps that sometimes aren't always accurate or don't list all the nearby points of interest

avenza just changed their subscription service so that now if you are paying the $50/plan you can only import 20 maps a year. Before it was that you could only have 20 maps at any given time. this policy change has been poorly communicated and basically forces myself and colleagues to purchase the $250/yr plan which we will not be doing. Expect to be paying that much as well if you are using this for work.

The most basic features are pay walled since acquisition by VC. shame. Ens**tification at work.

I use this app for firefighting works good should make it a discounted rate for firefighters and emergency personnel using it. For emergencies.

Very handy when out in the bush, but new gps tends to go in and out of accuracy, I pay for avenza (legacy) for years but now they want me to pay more pro for my part time work as 20 one time downloads is not enough to play and work with. there is another app that does what i need for free so unless Avenza figures this out I will cancel my account.
