Best trail app I've come across. extensive selection of routes in great detail. Hard to get lost

I have been subscribed to AllTrails for many years now. I love it, I have lists saved for every state and country I want to visit. I always have offline maps downloaded. I use it all the time while hiking. I'm definitely a lifelong customer.

I pay for the app and have less stats then someone who pays nothing. im not sure if its because they are american or have an iPhone. I'm done paying for alltrails! I just installed again and all my stats are gone and my detailed hiking lists as well. guess ill have to pay for Gaia GPS since its amateur hour with this app

A lot of trails submitted by amateurs, some very dubious routes and I've hit fencing more than once, where there is none on the all trails route.

The app's great! I downgraded to 3 stars only because the app ignores my preferences and keeps sending me notifications. I had to disable them at the OS level. EDIT: Thanks AllTrails for the quick response; rating upped to 4. I'm not talking about emails, I'm talking about app notifications. The app ignored my notification prefs set within it, so I had to block at Android OS level. UPDATE Oct 2026: still same problem; all options unchecked but still recv; have blocked again, downgraded to 3 star

Great app to discover new places to walk. Very easy to use

I used the pro version for a while. I stopped using it when it priced me out. I am a hiking leader and I wish they had a discounted version or a free pro version for leaders that teach navigation.

Been using this App for a few years, and until recently had no issues. However its been hard to use lately, download a map and it won't open without Internet connection! I thought that was the point of downloading it? then the issue of the trail clearly going one way and the directional arrow pointing the opposite or indeed any random direction all while having a strong Internet connection. Then today, (the reason for this review) it actually logged me out while checking the map. frustrated.

I don't like how we can't pay monthly and when I tried to get the Plus with REI account it automatically opted for Peak.

I continue to use all trails because I do enjoy the trail reviews and information listed for many trails . cons -that it doesn't accurately track you on trail even with full service. cons - download the trail but if you are out of service and don't have the downloaded trail ready ..you wont be able to load or search for that downloaded trail so got to have the app ready with the trail before going out of service or it's just useless out on trail . so use cal topo or something else tracking

I use this app to find trails near me at i travel around. love it. but wish I could open the app without having cell service. lots of the trails I go on dont have service.

Not installing an app that forces an account to use. What happened to non privacy invasive apps.

Great app, the only thing missing is telling you the distance from your current location. It's a little random with suggestions.

I enjoy using AllTrails on my Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra, but I’d love to see a zoom in/out feature for the map, similar to Garmin watches. The fixed map scale makes it difficult to check trail intersections and upcoming turns without using my phone. Adding pinch-to-zoom or on-screen zoom controls would greatly improve navigation and make the app more convenient and safer for hikers. I hope this feature can be added in a future Wear OS update!

App doesn't even load. I've had countless technical issues with the app, especially of late. But now it won't even open at all. reinstalled, and that solved nothing. The app would be great if it worked

I don't know what they did to their interface but it has more stuff and is less usable. When I get into the app and hit the nearby button, it takes me to near my home rather than near where I am. I have to pretend i'm navigating to get the app to locate me. I have to hit several buttons to see all the trails near me & when I look at a trail, I can't see how to get back to that list. when I back out of the trail it goes back to my home NO I don't want alltrails to have access to my health info!!

Your AI integration is bad and whoever decided that this would help people should never be listened to again. Just because everyone has been cramming LLMs into everything that doesn't mean it provides ANY value whatsoever. Edit: All this app's notifications are intrusive and useless.

I love that you can see yourself on the map, with the trail drawn, and it's a topographical map. It makes it hard to get lost 🤣 Love the updated features!

A Bit hard to navigate, always spam you to used the Paid version

Constantly pauses itself during an activity on my OnePlus 13 unless I regularly open the app, despite allowing permissions and disabling battery optimization, rendering it pretty useless. Worked perfectly on my OnePlus 7. Probably going to switch to something else.

Great user experience and awesome live maps

The latest update seems to have changed how offline maps work. If you have service when using the app and then lose service, it no longer loads the offline map like it used to. I wasn't aware of this change and lost cell service while navigating, leaving me unable to navigate as I had previously. This is a major issue for a hiking app, where you often lose service on the trail. Please fix this or make the change clearer to users.

Oct 26, 2026, the issue stated below has been corrected. 10.11.26 update: there is no fix for this issue. you only talk to an ai bot. I do not recommend purchasing this app it is a complete waste of money. 10.10.26 - app will no longer show the grade while previewing the map, makes the app useless. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app with no change. I paid $80 to use the app for 4 months, what a waste of money!! please fix this issue.

We appreciate the comprehensive collections of trails and user reviews; always helpful to preview their experiences. We do use the app for real-time navigation on many trails which is as good as other apps. We have generally stopped using the app for exploring new trail options. It feels like every time I click on a link, I have to fight through 2-4 pop ups, overlays, etc. to get to what I wanted to see. Much easier to use other tools for search.

app has changed the way it reconciles the elevation after the activity concludes. it's now not accurate and underestimates it. I know this from regular specific height hikes, and have checked with other similar apps since and they all report accurately. such a shame alltrails broke what had worked for years with no issues. accuracy is important to me as a high volume trail hiker, so unfortunately have no choice but to move elsewhere to get the accuracy back.

Stop asking me every 5 seconds if I want to upgrade to the paid version! If I was considering it before, I definitely wouldn't upgrade after how obnoxious this is. The app is barely usable with that prompt popping up constantly while you're navigating around.

All trails used to be a breakthough awesome app for hikers. At some point it became about money and now its REALLY about money. I picture some guy rubbing his nipples asking me if i wanna see offline maps well that'll be 16 bucks! So sad that something so cool became 'dont you think you should pay rather' and bloated with features you never use. Thank god that tilted 3d map side view abomination got clawed back. Sorry all trails thats my rant! You know a basic free working map, then maybe id pay

Great for tracking my trails

Great app. Tiny learning curve but you get used to it fast. Only down side is there's no "family share/pack" type subscription option at all. I would love it if my fiance could also use the app without needing to pay for an entire separate subscription. That way we at least have more than one device with our maps.

Decent app, UI isn't great, click MAP takes you to map with some features bit not map with others like plan route unless you click the identical button from a different basescreen. Somewhat forced socials insisting you share every 10 minute stroll, and costly, pushing pay pay pay everytime you try to use a feature, then when you do, pushes may MORE since their "plus" is pretty insipid in what it offers. I guess they are counting on sunk cost fallacy to then get their "peak" subscriptions

no full screen option. the app works good but it's cluttered by the menu and navigation area at bottom of the screen. even Google maps offers a full screen view.

not a bad mapping system, quite poor as a walking navigation aid. feature poor - no search that i could find, no distance to goal, waypoint functionality poor. very dissapointing. also failed the commitment re free trial - no communication, just billed my credit card.

Dont find this app anything special giving any insight on trail info I can find elsewhere not to mention it's not that user friendly. I dont get the hype. I've found better info with good old google or youtubing for trails

Updates causing problems. Alltails- you've had years with me as a paying customer and you have also had years to sort out glitches and faults with your app. Your online help is nonexistent and doesn't return a query even remotely to what I was searching for. Why does the map suddenly track in zig zag fashion rather than the precise route I walk. Ive made changes on my phone but looks like I'll have to uninstall and reinstall the app again.....again! START DOING BETTER PLEASE.

everytime I choose a trail God forbid I move the map over it deselects my trail. also when I try to punch out slightly it keeps zooming back in. if I try to zoom in by double clicking it doesnt zoom in until I manually pinch in first. serious question. do the developers who make this actually go out and use it bc if they did they would see the lil dumb annoyances like these that fight you instead of assist you. it's just getting tedious to use. if I select a dang trail leave it selected!

For a long time it was possible to see the (cached) map when offline, but now the view will be blocked. If you happen to encounter that while on a trail it can be outright dangerous.

MISLEADING ADVERTISING There are multiple levels of their "premium" services. Check to make sure youre not buying a year and not getting the feature you want as the good ones are buried behind the extra premium subscriptions, hidden within the fine print. Good luck getting a refund too. I wasted 35 dollars if I remember correctly. If I help one person avoid wasting their money, then itll be worth it.

Love this app. It has guided me with 100% reliability while hiking in the Adirondack mountains. The watch app is also fantastic. I'm not sure when they added it but the map feature is awesome! The phone and watch apps give you the capabilities of high end expensive sport watches.

Most if not all of the mileage is way off. Trail difficulty is off. GPS is terrible. Do not download this there are way better apps for backcountry navigation. Try OX backcountry or far out apps way better don't waste your money. And don't trust this app to be able to navigate safely in using this app. If I could give zero stars I would.

This app is great for navigating and creating hiking trails.

A useful app but it takes multiple attempts to download some park maps while others won't download at all; even after uninstalling and reinstalling the app.

Useless since the latest update. Unable to download maps, and it crashes every time I try to access my saved maps. Enough of the unnecessary bells and whistles - make the features that people pay for actually work.

good source for choosing hikes

Would be good if you could edit more of your finished activities. GPS sometimes gets elevation wrong, so it would be handy to be able to delete that part. Also sometimes it attributes recorded activities to trails that you haven't done. Would also be nice if, like the park badges, it had the Wainrights, Yorkshire 3 Peaks, National 3 Peaks, etc etc

Although this app has great trails, I don't use it enough. however I was charged a fee.I thought this app was free. why was I charged?

It is accurate for the description of the trails and locations while hiking. suggestions are always helpful with pictures. I highly recommend.

Great app for finding great hiking spots! Accuracy is pretty good but updates on certain trails could be better. I wouldn't go hiking without this app and I always download the trails before I leave home which is another awesome feature.

the app used to be great, but now it has so many popups that either cannot be bypassed or keep coming back after closing. It also has hidden more behind the paywall. I just want trail info and navigation.

This is a fantastic app for hiking and finding out more information about hiking trails. if you're looking for a car wash or for the best beef sandwich on the west side of the Mississippi, then this won't be your app. But if you're looking for a solid way to find some great hiking trails anywhere across the country, then this is going to be your go-to piece of software. Good luck and may you find what you're looking for out on that trail.

The wrong turn alert not only did not work, but paused my trail progress during my last hike. And was not accurate enough to help me backtrack. also, the ability to live alert was not available to me even after I shut down the app, updated, reloaded the app, and redownloaded the map before beginning the hike.

Perfect except for the constant bombardment of turn on location requests. If I wanted my location settings on, they would be!

The navigation tracking skips major parts of the routes despite the app being open and on screen, draining my battery, and having service. Somehow, I rode my bike straight through the middle of the river... which made my five mile bike ride 1.7 miles. Did the same thing on my ride today. I used to love this app.

The app keeps force-closing on me due to a bug. Really unhelpful when hiking backcountry trails, as I'm then told I can't open downloaded maps without service -- completely defeating the purpose of offline maps.

The app is amazing. Very usefull and a must if you enjoy any level of hiking or trail riding. My few gripes with the app are related to user experince. I'll point out two: 1. In Explore mode if you select a trail to see the route, as soon as you move the map the trail disapeares. You must choose the trail and only then can you move around. This can be frustrating and time consuming. 2. Saved trails are way to easy to swipe/delete from your list and an "undo" button does not exist.

the map is not working again on Galaxy watch 8 it is just blinking white and then black shows nothing at all have tried uninstalling reinstalling very data in cash but no luck this has happened in the past and it's some sort of bug

There are so many ads for their paid plan I'm not even sure what the point is in having a free one. I tried using it just to see what was near me and had 4 separate ads.

One of the best apps designed for mobile, I wish the auto resume works as expected, everything else including auto pause works just fine.

Used to love this app, but now it's basically unusable.

I should be able to veiw something quickly on browser without having a pop up constantly harass me to go to the app which I already have by the way. that sucks and its annoying.

lied about the trail i went to. said it was scenic overlooks and a waterfall. none of that existed. gave me directions to a parking spot. walked for 3 hours and ended up in a small city. tried to get a lyft back to my truck but the app gave me a completely different parking lot 10 minutes away. same trail same "get directions" button 2 different locations. luckily my guy had dropped a pin and we were able to find my truck again. better off navigating the wilderness with a compass and a paper map

Buy paper topos rather than give these fools your money. Navigation started prior to leaving cell range now cries for mommy when you no longer have coverage. This is ridiculous and douchey, app used to actually be USEABLE on free tier for serious hikers. Not so much now.

Disabled all push notifications in the app settings, still receiving push notifications. Disable notifications in my phones settings, can't use the app because notifications are off. What a joke.

Map features are problematic, no current location, or it disappears, or map zooms out too much, zooming by double tap is flawed, zooming by tap and dragging is flawed, I want to see where I am and explore around as the menu says, 25% of the screen is covered by a window I cannot remove I dont want to find trails, I want want to walk from my current location to another point on the map. Map interaction is very frustrating. Three stars for the data.

free trial doesn't work. signed up for the free trial but every time I went to use the service it just kept directing me to the free trial. canceled the subscription because im not paying for somthjng that doesn't work

can no longer see milage or elevation when I tap on the trail elevation map. just shows a white box now. this was the most useful feature of the app so I will need to find an alternative if this isn't resolved

This app has poor off line reliability and requires a subscription. Not worth it! There are better apps and free tools that provide the same or better features.

I like a lot of the features and details it contains but my God is it SUPER vague and frankly useless when it comes to trying to find backpacking sites where you can set up camp unless you're a premium user. It also bombards you every couple seconds with an ad for premium if you click on pretty much anything outside the overview or a couple of reviews. This stupid app is supposed to make me excited to go backpacking but it's only making me confused and more frustrated with finding routes.

for navigation in the national forests with no cell signal, this app is a must have and has never let me down.

App has turned into one giant advertisement and push to get you to sign up for plus. It lacks the features for the price of others apps like Caltopo, Gaia, and OnX.

forced to do a subscription that most may forget to cancel after the "trial" period is a SCAM! if they would do a 7-day trial and then just block the app until you pay, that would be ok. but this way is NOT ok!

another upsell trial subscription that made it impossible to cancel until one day after I was charged for the year. I tried the fake premium to hopefully download offline maps but it never worked. of course I didn't read the reviews before, this complaint is echoed hundreds of times.

Riddled with Ads!! I tried using this app once... ONCE!! And my gmail has now been inundated with ads from Outside marketing. Do not download!!! Try Komoot instead, waaay better!!!

I love this app but just use the free version because I hike so rarely. Very handy though when wanting to find a trail out of town

The best app for hiking

A recent update made it so your map is cleared as soon as you lose reception and interact with it (pan or zoom). On a trail with spotty reception? Be prepared to get lost. The app INTENTIONALLY wipes your map as a dark pattern to get you to buy the plus subscription.

Really useful if you love walking and when travelling all over the world. Easy to use, great for tracking and the ability to download routes in advance.

Great app has endless options with alot of filters you can use to help pick the perfect trail. If you're in a new area and you're looking for someplace to hike, this is the best app that you can choose. I would highly recommend this to anybody who is an outdoorsman or likes to go on hikes or even nature walks. love that it saves all of my hikes and has A LOT of cool details on all of my hikes and tracks everything

The new update deletes saved trails WAY TOO EASY. I'll be scrolling at them and they flick to delete so easy and you can't undo it. I'm so irritated.

it has a really bad tracking system but it makes the app worth it with its recommendation

Have been using this app all good and works well excellent for just going for a hike, but when in the bike feature only gives me the same trails with most of them not suitable for a bike, or is it me.

Syncing issues, lost my hike that was over 6.5 miles and 700ft in elevation. Do not reccomend for people actually trying to track their experiences. Support cannot help with syncing issues.

I accidentally swiped my screen, which caused an item on my saved list to be deleted. There's no "undo" option so I can't get it back. I'm pretty disappointed. It prompts the question, "why is there an edit list button if you can edit it whenever it's displayed the screen?"
