I dislike the new crossword layout. It doesn't adapt its size to my phone screen correctly necessitating constant adjustment, it's interface is cumbersome and the flashy colours are unnecessary. Please do better Guardian!

Messed up the crossword UI again. On tablet the crossword is about 2" square eyesight test. Please put back option for old UI which filled the screen and had icons for check word etc. Stop messing with it.

You changed the crossword UI a few months back and made it so much worse. Then after complaints you added the option to use the old UI again which was good. Now the latest update has removed that option. Please put it back and stop messing with it. Really really annoying.

please give an option to restore crosswords to the old style, if the new one is too annoying for a fifteen year old imagine how it's going to be for a middle aged or older person. review goes up at least one star if you allow the old style of crosswords.

The redesign of the crosswords is horrid and not user friendly. Was it even play tested? Might have to give up playing it.

Really don't like the new crossword layout! Another daily treat ruined by an over-keen software developer (or their interfering manager) who thinks they know what the crossword solver wants. Give the customer the choice between classic or new.

Was good but now as of today, the Crossword UI has totally changed to a really small view of the crossword that I can hardly read and no more check word etc buttons at the top and a strange 'in-app' keyboard that you have to double click to view. Please change it back how it was! I am using a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite. Update : option to use old crossword ui has disappeared. Please put it back and stop messing with it.

Hello, I love the Guardian app, so I've bought an annual subscription. Unfortunately I was disappointed that I can only use it on my Android phone, i want to read the Guardian on my iPad tablet as well, unfortunately it doesn't give me the paid version when signing up with my Gmail.

Widget on Android (One UI 9.0) now working after latest update!

Why remove the "show read articles" setting which displays the green tick on articles I've read? Are you trying to make the app less useful? Rated accordingly.

I have been looking for a different news journal to subscribe to since cancelling my subscription to a certain centrist journal. Thought i would give the Guardian a go and so far love the interface of the app. I was going to subscribe but cannot get the widget to work. I have tried everything in battery settings, cleared cache, removed and readded app, restarted phone etc but nothing has worked. The widget seems to be stuck on loading. I want to sort this out before committing to a subscription.

Always an excellent app however notifications stop working on a regular basis. Previously I left the beta programme to cure this but now I am in full fat non-beta and have seen no notifications for the last week. Maybe Trump broke them?

Only two stars because the widget doesn't work - it just sits there, empty of any content apart from the word "Loading... ". This is on my Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra.

I deleted the app because it limits the number of articles you can view...even though I send them $5 a month. The app also interferes with viewing the website, where you can see all the articles you want.

Have you given up on the widget? If so please just let us all know. and still the widget doesn't work are you even paying your app team these days! why is it so difficult for you to have a functional widget? 🙄

so now I have a app that when I tap on discover it crashes. expensive news and buggy app. thinking of cancelling the subscription as can't justify the expense for the product now . support limited. miss the previous owners

This is more of a pixel problem but the widget doesn't work for Android 17 and Google should be able to fix this and hasn't so please encourage them to make your widget work on pixel devices!

Content is great albeit a little too much opinion vs news, but recently the app freezes from time to time and has to be closed. Hope this can be fixed. I've been a Guardian fan for a long time and a member supporting the app.

Widget no longer displays articles after Android 17 update

since the last update, the widget gets stuck on 'loading'.

I took out a year subscription via Google subscription but this did not cancel my previous subscription so I was paying twice for months. I was refused a refund. Now I can't sign in using Google subscription. How shxt is this? The print edition used to be called The Gruinard because of how often it fuxxed things up. This tradition of incompetence also infects the digital set up. Perhaps The Mail wants my money.

Constantly asks for more information and for you to sign in through google to read articles. No thanks. Does puff masturbatory pieces about right-wing garbage like John Cena, who's mentor and best buddy is a rapist and woman abuser.

Downloaded after MSNow started blocking a lot of their content with paywalls. Now The Guardian is doing the same thing. Back to the drawing board

Using the web version of the Guardian I see easy to read black text on a white background. Using the Guardian app I see white text on a black background that quickly becomes tiresome to read. So, I still use the web to read the Guardian.

update: This is now the THIRD time I have been billed AFTER canceling this MONTHLY service. I was enjoying this app until one day, it said I could only view ten more articles for free. What? I was a SUBSCRIBER at $15/month. I tried contacting customer service and they COMPLETELY IGNORED ME so I decided to cancel. They billed me another $15 AFTER I canceled and then another $18 the next month. At this point, I have told my credit card company to step in. DO N-O-T SUBSCRIBE TO THIS SERVICE.

The crossword update is terrible! The puzzle doesn't fit on the screen. The haptic tic is gone when using the keyboard. The share button is everywhere... who shares a crossword answer?

Don't install this app! I just paid £120 to renew my subscription but I still don't have access to any articles. The Guardian help desk says that this is between me and Google and they can't help. Apparently I should have signed up via The Guardian website. What a massive ripoff.

The application has been simplified, meaning you can no longer customize it. Digital menu and article headlines read like Cosmopolitan magazine. 'Breaking News: Apple unveils folding phone'!

Why do crossword puzzles not work since recent upgrade? Now there is no keyboard at bottom of screen to enter letters into the spaces, always worked previously.

Unhappy crossword user This used to be a great App until the Guardian decided to prettify the crosswords. When I complained about the floating grid I was told it's expected behaviour. I'm sure no-one asked for this and all that's happened is that they've annoyed many loyal supporters. I've now re-installed the previous Version of the app and hope the original crossword layout is offered as an option some time.

Good app, great journalism, but the forced registration wall is a deal breaker for me. it's "free" and and secures their financial well being by additional means other than direct reader support, which I would have done, and have done it for other publications, the difference is that those other publications allowed me to choose WHEN to support and voluntarily register my info. Forcing a would-be reader from the first article you want to access reeks of a paywall by another name. uninstalled.

I love the Guardian app, but what have you done to the crosswords?? You can't see the whole puzzle anymore without scrolling left and right, and the colours are annoying. you also have to tap twice to check an answer, whereas you used to have to only tap an icon once in the top right of the screen. Crosswords are one of the main reasons I pay for the app, and is making me doubt my subscription fee. Please please bring the old view back!

installing this was a mistake. tries to force me into using it when my preferred reading mode us a web browser. tge fond in the app is too clunky and i can't even filter out content I'm not interested in, so what's the point?

crosswords basically unusable now. shame.

Until update this app would have been five stars, now only one and that because zero isn't possible. The developers have been allowed to do things because they 'could' and not what they 'should'. The crossword puzzles have ceased to work and are grey in appearance - irrespective of whether Dark or Light mode is selected. Keyboard frequently fails to load if an answer attempt is made. Being visually impaired I can no longer use this. All in all a disaster - putting subscription on hold.

I've been subscribing to the paid app for many years. Very unhappy with the recent change to the crosswords: the crossword no longer fits on screen and there is unwanted highlighting. Previous version was in line with other crosswords eg NYT. Please roll back and I'll resume doing your crossword.

Not wild about the new crossword format, like many other users. However, my main gripe is that I no longer seem to be getting alerts with breaking news or when a new article by one of the contributors I follow is published, even though notifications are shown as on in the app.

I was shocked to find that Crossword function had become clunky and virtually unusable on my Android 14 tablet. Crosswords on my Android 15 phone are performing as usual though.

crossword app has changed - terrible

Since yesterday the crosswords only appear in printable version and cannot be done online on my tablet. Why?

The Crossword interface is now unusable on a tablet. To get back to the (pre-August update) usable interface I have to uninstall then reinstall the app (and lose my history of completed crosswords) Obviously not a solution, please can you go back to the pre-August Crossword layout.

17/8/2026 - which bloody idiot changed the crosswords? Now I can barely see the grid and the old crosswords have all been cleared. Why do you allow moronic oafs to change the design like this? Did you even run it by those of us who actually use the app or did some brainless intern with a GCSE in Stupidity decide to use his crayons to change things round because they were bored?

news and reporting still very good but the August 2026 changes, with new layout, fonts and ORANGE colours are unpleasant - like driving in France in the 70s. This kind of unnecessary and inexpert rebranding may lose you this app subscriber and I'll just return to the browser version.

here's an idea, it would be good if when using the crossword archive it would take you back to the same place in the list of crosswords when you finish and go back having completed a crossword rather than going to the most recent crosswords every time

Very unhappy with the update to the cryptic crossword, especially the fact you can no longer see the entire grid the way you could before and that the grid floats about on the screen. It was great as it was. Now feels gimmicky. There's no need to highlight correct answers in green, or have unchecked ones in red. Gimmicky. How about an option to switch back to the previous look?

It's an excellent alternative when you can't actually get hold of the hard copy, and, it updates during the day! Later update.. But what has happened to the format of the quick crosswords. It seems to have changed overnight and now not nearly so friendly! Adice is needed on whether it's my mobile or your changes. And, furthermore, how can we get it back to the old format?

I used to love doing the crosswords on this app but since the most recent update, the user interface is really bad. At a bare minimum, when you click on squares on the crossword you should get the keyboard popping up so you can enter your answer but this doesn't happen! Did anyone test this for usability?

Been using this daily for several years without any problem. Never been any hitches. Until I changed phones August 2026, now some of the features have changed. Both Android, same make 😒.

paywall rubbish.

The crossword interface is now awful. The ability to select your keyboard has gone, you're stuck with the one forced on you. The grid has shrunk to half its size so clues can be shown at the side. These now text wrap destroying any of the setter's intention to use the letter flow as part of the parsing. Options that were easily accessed on the top line are hidden in sub menus. A disaster for people with poor eyesight and dexterity. Typical computer type interpretation, not what solvers want.

What on earth have you done to the crosswords in Android. They're unplayable, hard to get to the keyboard, no cheat word option even though it's selected. Did nobody try this before release?

Crossword completion less user friendly. The latest update has made it difficult to get the to keyboard to appear, there is no quick check for answers, this now needs 3 screen touches, and cursor not left on first empty square in incomplete answer. It wasn't broke so why 'fix' it?

World reporting that cuts through to give readers the facts not embellishments. Very clear assessment of what readers want to know.

I am a fan of The Guardian. It's not surprising that Jason Bourne meets one from The Guardian. But it's tiring to keep seeing that Pay in USD. I don't want to pay in USD. I want to pay in INR. Where's the option for that?!

paid for Guardian App and it doesnt work

Love the app. I use it daily. However, please, please can you allow a calendar search for older puzzles? I've completed that many, I have to keep scrolling to find a date where there's a puzzle I haven't seen. If I accidentally click a completed one, I have to start scrolling from the beginning again! For those interested, I'm actually a descendant of the late Jeremiah Garnett. He was a reporter and editor who built The Guardian from a fragile 1821 startup into a powerful daily newspaper.

Since yesterday the app has stopped working when trying to open Google links to articles. I can see the app opening and closing (crashing?) in the background. This is also happening when trying to open some articles within the app.

Love the app, long-time subscriber here. I'm writing this review primarily to say that the app has been making me log in everytime I open the app and want to read an article. Once I go through that login process, I can read articles until the next time I close and re-open the app. Then it makes me login again. This has been happening for weeks now. Can this somehow be fixed? Except for that, I highly recommend the app.

20 articles a month? Show adverts if you must but locking out the free service after 20 articles makes this app pointless now for non subscribers. I'll just use the website now.

Tells me to sign in to read, but then always has an error preventing sign in. I don't have cookie settings on a APP, rather than a browser. Love the news articles, always on point. But I can't see anything anymore. Time to uninstall.

Don't like the layout, looks like there's no news. I go on it for 5 mins, see there's nothing worth reading (or it looks like it from the layout) then decide to google search the news instead. I used to use the mirror app which has a better layout, but they've started pushing news on the Beckhams or old news and not much more

Guardian reader since 1957, Alastair Cooke & Michael Frayn. Now a pale shadow of those days, tending to be a mix of Titbits, Reveille & the House Mag of a women's cooperative. Can't get its subscriptions in order. My income is in £s but I live in Euroland so want to pay in £s, which after all must be their major currency for expenditures? Also, they can't comprehend that the same guy could want to use 2 email addresses and different gadgets- Laptop - also Android phone(s). Bring back Rusbridge

Update 7/15/2026: It now requires sign- in with Javascript enabled, which may be an issue. I was finally able to resolve it, so fingers crossed 🤞| I set it for alerts, quickly scan the front page, and occasionally read an article or op-ed piece. Works fine.

July 13 2026 update: The widget on Android is completely broken. It displays some pictures and some horizontal lines. The app itself still doesn't conform to proper Android behavior. It doesn't reside in the background, but shuts itself off, no matter what settings I've enabled. Fix it please.

Interesting and stimulating long pieces which can also be heard through the listening facility. Sometimes I look at the US and Australia editions but mostly I check the UK website. Finally the Guardian is still the only website I know of without a pay wall.

I have subscribed to The Guardian for ten years and appreciate highly its journalism. However, after these years I have now changed my mobile system from iPhone to Android, and as a result of that the paper is not willing in any way to transfer my ongoing subscription, unlike all the other dailies and magazines I subscribe to. The response from the paper reminds my of Pravda in its glory times. Steer away!

You're unable to view any content without signing in. This is not a paid service, so there should be no need to sign in. it's simply personal information gathering. That's what the census is for.

It's a nice little daily challenge, but all too often perfectly valid words are rejected, while other nonsensical ones are listed.

Good paper, awful app. You still force stuff on me on the home screen, but now with the 'don't show this section' button gone 🤦‍♂️ The split list (Home/My Guardian) means I'm offered the same articles twice (or more!). Last week's news are dated 'less than a minute ago'. 😬 UPDATE: the 'saved articles' section has brought back stuff I read AND UNMARKED months ago. Every improvement comes bundled with two new disasters! At least read articles now are marked again

Intelligent Diverse & Not Propaganda

Normally guardian provides refreshing news in contrast to right leaning news media with exaggerated news events. Good to read features calling the right to be accountable. Political sketches are delightful to read.

This used to be a really good app, but over the last month or so I've noticed that the articles are going blank when initially selected, or when scrolling. Others have reported this issue many times, and the latest update does not fix the issue. Update - the developers have fixed the issue so the review has been updated to reflect this.

My principal go-to source of news, reliably produced and curated by true and gifted professionals. I love that the app lets you tune in to the latest from different parts of the English-speaking world.
