I was using it but i received a message that I have to verify my account and i don't know what that means but the message said that i will not be able to use the app anymore in a few weeks. This sucks to be honest, I feel compelled to uninstall it, weird stuff.

What a total piece of absolute trash. No Tor integration possible anywhere. Ridiculous childish app doesn't even include Socks option to route through Tor. At no part of the setup process can you first introduce a proxy to prevent leaking your IP to a home server. Matrix absolutely blows

I like chatting on Matrix every now and then, it's especially great for groups with high security ambitions. While there are more user friendly apps, none of the traditional messengers are supporting Matrix like Element. An upgrade to the new release under the name X has been overdue for years! So I'm happy it's finally stable and polished.

so i am forced to get the app on another device to confirm the session, yet I cannot confirm the sessione because prompts don't work. email and two-step verification like everybody else no? I had to use recovery keys

The app requires opening to synchronize it's channel content, where the app even needs to be killed /reopened to trigger the sync. This behaviour is there for quite some time (well before the end date of 2025.)

Cant even send a 50mb file without it having an error right after completing the upload. "100mb limit" what a joke. Terrible

If there is no internet connection, it automatically tries to connect to matrix servers and screen is just stuck at loading. we cant connect to our private server without a hassle.

The application right now is working fine, but is asking me to verify all the time, but it won't let me verify, developers should work on this because it's not working, at least not for me, I have both versions installed, the Smartphone one and the Desktop one, I cannot verify using either, it says "Confirm your digital identity" but when selecting the option "Use another device to verify" it doesn't work, "Starting the verification on the other device" doesn't work!

A little rough around the edges but holds up well. Sticking here until Element X is stable and reaches feature parity.

As of todayI am done with the app. The verification process is not working. There is no way to contact tech support. the fourm chat is no help they say is back up your chats, but no steps are given. I am using an android phone, and I tried to verify my phone with my laptop, and it says it sent my laptop a notification to verify, but it doesn't. I teoed with other computers as well. all my military buddies are having the same issues. Element used to be great. Now im going to try Jami or Session

After setting the server and a registration I cannot pass the re: captcha, constantly getting an error: " ERROR for site owner: Invalid domain for site key". Therefore I cannot pass and cannot use the app.

Element/Riot is the best "secure" messenger I have ever used.

I am very grateful for y'all, your app is great and I love the privacy features. It great to see companies that still treat their customers with respect and privacy. I was able to make my server in less than an hour and it all works great, me and my friends like it and we are happy to ditch discord in favor of you.

Kind of strange that you can't validate your first device without first selecting "can't confirm" and going through that process. Works as needed afterwards. Hopefully this gets improved in the near future as many users including myself are looking for Discord alternatives.

Frustrating experience. I just want an option so I can move away from failed Discord, but this seems to take preposterous into another level. I can't seem to verify on any device, and the reset keys option doesn't even work. The instructions are a joke and extremely difficult to understand, because options that they want you to do arent even there. What a failed miserable experience. I will continue looking for a substitute, because this isn't it.

Because there are a lot of negative reviews about user experience, let me clarify: It is how the matrix protocol is designed: Privacy, Decentralisation and Security first. This App doesn't set the rules, it just implements this protocol.

Everything about this app is perfect, the only problem is that it doesn't support multiple accounts on multiple servers simultaneously.

please please please for the love of God fix your video compression. I hate having to try and try and try over and over and over again to send 1 video just because it stalls 9 out of 10 times. otherwise good for privacy but much so much bug.

The main window does not refresh active rooms after joining without restarting the app...pretty big bug if you ask me....overall the app design is pretty clanky and dated as well as non intuitive. Usable? yes. Well designed UI? Not really.

Lost my Important messages because Element Security Key feature is broken. Always says incorrect. Also, almost every time we Verify sessions it Cancels or has no Effect mostly. It only works with QR Code. Joining Rooms is be very Buggy and Fails alot. Joining multiple Rooms is very an extremly slow process. Instead of fetching new Messages when Idle, it does nothing.

Still better than the new client. Does its job well and has minimum flaws. What pisses me off is the notification sync. Reading messages on my PC still trigger new message notification on my phone. At last it supports all matrix instances, the new one does not.

Resetting the key and "setting up recovery" just shows it will take several seconds but that thing is doing something since 5min and nothing. Sorry but why the hell is Element so unreliable?

Absolutely useless. Every time I boot it up on my phone, I'm demanded to "Verify on another device". I can enter a password instead, except it never recognises whatever I've set as password. I can try to reset everything, but this loads forever and doesn't proceed. I can actually access some individual rooms by long pressing the app symbol, which gives me a seemingly random pop-up of rooms that I can open up - and this doesn't require any verification! - but if I try to use it normally, lock.

The app is great overall, but Element Calls need improvements. When on a Wi-Fi call and a carrier call comes in, both overlap instead of pausing. On mobile data, calls get stuck on "connecting" if the network changes and never reconnect, unlike WhatsApp. Also, chat/file search is weak — uploads don’t show unless we scroll to that date. Please fix these issues and refine call stability.

I dont know what the devs have done but they have made this app completely useless. its out right broken. been using it for many yrs now and this app has gone to garbage. You no longer can rely on notifications of calls to work properly and syncing messages or verification ia a major hit and miss. The desktop app use to be the best out of the other options but now its gone to garbage as well. Sad to say but im done im looking else where do not download this app!

Do notifications work for anyone? Despite having it opted out of battery optimization, it doesn't even give you notification of a message until you open the app 2 months ago. it worked fine. now it barely works at all

Not for most people. Syncing messages takes ages, sometimes fails completely. Group messages are unreliable and calls often does not work at all. The UI also has a lot to wish for, it's nowhere near as polished as WhatsApp or Telegram.

I did not recommend that application for everyone except masochists who love crashes and bugs. go away !

Element stopped the support on the browser based version without warning. I tried to restore my important messages via this app but it's impossible. This unconscious lack of professionalism is mind blowing!!!

App has gotten worst and is so disruptive with missing messages, non delivery and receiving, delay in sending and receiving. I've lost and missed many important messages and time is crucial for me during a chat and that's when element screws up. Utterly disappointed and it's not once or twice but every month, there's this issue!!!

I've been using it for a few years on my hosted setup. this is really buggy, failed to send messages due to network issues?it will have a permanent bar that says sending failed and you can't delete the message that it failed to send. voice and video calls would often get stuck on connecting. if it connects, it gets jittery sometimes. I tried investigating if it's a server issue but the servers seem to work well. want to look at photos you've sent via other devices? nope

Last Update Broke Functionality. Since the last update a few days ago, the app stops talking with the server making it seem like a server issue. The fix is to clear all data in the app and log back in again, at which point it will work for about a day and then stop again. This needs to be fixed

It's missing the ability to see image captions which they added to Element X and Element web. It's slow to sync because they only added the faster new sync technology to Element X. But it has everything else that Element X is missing. I hate how there are two Element apps that are both compromised in some way versus the other.

Add once photo feature.

If you edit and save a message without changing anything, the formatting will change for the worse in several ways. It's a huge pain that should be fixed. Wish that messages returned to straight markdown when you're editing them.

Needs "search" functions within rooms and threads, and an easier way to find conversation threads so they don't get lost. I'll have great conversations in the rooms but then cannot easily find the conversation again without scrolling forever.

No vendor lock in - that's great. No search in messages - huge bummer! Update 2023: "search in messages" is still missing after years - dropping another star. Update 2024: still no search - dropping next star. If 2025 is not going to bring it I'll drop the last star, uninstall and advise against the app.

I like the idea of Matrix, but the performance is absolute dogwater even in chats of less than 12 people. Instead of fixing the performance issues, the developers have decided to build a paid, proprietary server, which is supposed to be better. The chat encryption is significantly worse than Signal on a technical level, and this app has by far the absolute worst UI I have ever seen on a messaging app. It is hard to tell messages apart because there are no borders between messages.

I'll wait until they've worked out the security/encryption bug. Continued popup regarding said feature which then cannot be implemented makes this app suspect regarding functionality and claims of performance.

The app is getting worse with time. I've submitted several bug reports to the dev team months ago, and none of them ever got fixed, and now the app has stopped sending notifications, so I never know when my friends are messaging me.

Lost all my message history after 2 years because the app somehow lost my encryption key that it only stored locally. Security is desirable against others reading my messages, not against myself being prevented from having access to 2 years' worth of history of my own messages.

Only issue is that there is background mail refresh issue and your messages are in limbo. Unrelated, but same thing happens with k9mail.

Put this on the quest app store please. You literally don't even need to change anything, it'll function exactly as intended as is. Save me the absolute hell that is side loading apks on quest.

a real security oriented competitor to discord. The future of messaging together with Signal. There are text bubbles in this app in settings and can there is two different UI layouts you can pick from, I prefer the classical layout, most of the complaints I've seen in these reviews are from people not going to settings to enable or toggle on an option.

Umm about taking screenshot I am kind of dissappointed as the app allows other to take screenshot even when I switched on the prevent screenshot mode. This switch only allow the user to not to take the screeshot. In the meantime opposite caller or user can take screenshot. Until the receiver also enable this option he or she might be able to take ss or screen-record as long as he/she want. So please fix it. Also it doesn't offer disappearing message. Which is also a disadvantage.

Still, just as broken as I remember it. I logged in for the first time in a long time and obviously don't have any other devices. Trying to go to reset everything, you just get an error saying "cannot find secrets in storage". I swear, using Matrix is kind of like using Linux in 2008, without internet access, and everything is in Spanish...

Says no phone number required, but then requires and email. Most emails require a phone number. So much for a "privacy alternative".

I've installed this application across a few devices and the experience is the same: bad. It'll randomly lock up. Space switching is a joke and only works when I clear the cache. The overview will often fail to update leaving me to guess which rooms are unread. It's a messaging app. Come on. It really feels like a microcosm of Matrix as a whole. They're pouring all their effort into ElementX (which still lacks basic functionality) while ignoring the problems that plague Element.

Why do you require camera permission in order for me to make a normal call? It's ridiculous that it forces video call and doesn't have a separate call without video. You have to give camera permission and then turn video off every time you want to make a normal call.

Doesnt work, crashes every time i enter meetings. If i dont close the crash screen i can still 8nteract with the meeting for 2 minutes.

This app sorely needs update. Unread notifications icon is stuck, no option to mark it as read, no option to delete threads at all.

Better whatsapp, because we're using our own infrastructure as server. It has a lot of features like live location, call and video call, polls, sharing files and pictures. Stickers don't seem to work in the app yet, but it works in the browser version and is only a gimmick anyway - emojis can be used of course. Overall great app, I can recommend it!

You can't even get past the Email Verification step of setting up an account. It sends a verification link to your email that you will never receive, because it never sent one in the first place.

This app will not verify ANY of my devices any more.

Videos send by users aren't playing

I've been using the Element app with a self-hosted server, and it’s been working great. To enhance the user experience, I suggest adding: 1) Link previews that automatically load information cards and images when a URL is shared, similar to other messaging apps. 2) Grouping of multiple images instead of listing them individually, as this can push the latest message too far down the screen. Other than these improvements, the app is fantastic. Thanks for the great work!

I can definitly recommend playing around with the matrix (email equivalent for instant messages) eco system and element is the best place to start! The switch to element (from Riot) borough such a huge usibility advantage. I love to see a messanger that is so versatile and has multi device encryption support to become more and more usable. Especially with the current version the look and feel has improved so much and it is usable as a Daly driver.

Annoying. Stop pestering me about enabling notifocation permissions every time I open the app. I have notifications disabled. I don't want them and I don't want to give permission. I just want to be able to access chats if I am away from a PC.

Element/Riot has been dragging its feet for years. The app has basic issues such as: no searching, stuck unread chat; message edits erasing formatting; canceling edits doesn't erase the message text box; app gets stuck asking for a verification from another device when you log in. Signal and Telegram are way more polished experiences for secure messaging. At this point, it's basically how not to write a messaging app.
